Common causes of data gaps in TotaLite monitoring include the following.
Data gaps: how to diagnose the cause
Data gaps almost always trace back to one of three places: the device, its connection, or a missing reference target. Work through the steps below in order before assuming there's a fault.
Step 1: Is the device powered on?
Check the device status on the platform. If it shows as offline with no recent activity at all, start with power. Power interruptions cause resets and stop data transmission entirely — a device that's lost power can't report a gap, it just goes silent.
Step 2: Is the device online with good signal strength?
If the device is powered but data is patchy, check its connectivity status and signal strength on the platform.
A signal below -95dBm is unreliable and will produce gaps. This is usually down to one of:
- Poor LTE coverage at the site — common indoors, underground, or in rural areas
- SIM card configuration issues preventing network registration
- Firmware incompatibility with the regional carrier
- The local network not supporting LTE-M

Step 3: Is the gap specific to one target?
If the device is online with good signal, but one target is missing data while others aren't, the issue sits with that target rather than the device.
Check whether the target is still in the field of view. If it isn't, that's your answer.
Step 4: Missing reference target
If steps 1–3 all check out — device powered, online, signal strong — and the gap traces back to a target that's dropped out of view, the most likely cause is a missing reference target.
Reference targets compensate for the sensor's own movement. Without one visible in the field of view, the data becomes unreliable, so it won't be shown. More on this here: Missing Reference Target
Other causes to rule out
If the above steps don't explain the gap, check for:
- Local storage limits during extended offline periods
- Buffer overflow when connectivity returns after a long outage
- Corrupt files blocking sync with cloud servers
Fixes
- Confirm the device is running firmware 1.8.1 or above
- To clear the buffer when device was offline for an extended period, wait for the device to upload the images. If un-successful, contact support.
- Power-cycle the device if possible, to reset to a clean connectivity state
